I work with two languages: English and Italian. Whether it’s translating written content or interpreting spoken conversations, I help people communicate seamlessly between these two languages.
People who aren’t familiar with the field often mix up these two expressions. The key distinction is: the translator writes, the interpreter speaks. So, the translator works with written texts, translating content like manuals, product sheets, catalogs, subtitles, technical documents, and more. On the other hand, the interpreter communicates orally with people speaking different languages at events like fairs, conferences, guided tours, or business negotiations.
Generally, translation rates are calculated per source word or per page.
There are no fixed rates for translations. Rates vary depending on the project. Factors that influence the price include the type of text, the format, the length of the text, and the delivery deadline. For example, an urgent translation costs more than a project I can work on with more flexible timing. Therefore, the rates are personalized. The price of an interpretation is based on a daily, hourly, or half-day rate. However, it should be noted that each interpretation quote takes into account not only the hours of work but also the time the interpreter needs to adequately prepare for the subject matter of the meeting or event that requires interpretation. At this point she was still working as a real estate agent but immediately I began having agent envy as it was clear that she was just the right kind of person we would loved to have had on our side when we were purchasing. To our surprise and delight, several months later Lucia began setting up her own business and we were all too eager to hop on board. First for simple services as arranging for house cleaning. She is fastidious in her approach to her work and will not stop until the job is complete to her satisfaction (which often exceeds our own satisfaction). As an example, when we were setting up our WI-FI, she stayed with us for hours at the shop to ensure we received the proper unit and that it was set up correctly. She then followed up many times to make sure that the WI-FI turned on as expected and she even assisted with getting the TVs set up to the satellite dishes (of which she also helped coordinate the installation). This is the sort of customer support that is rare in the US, let alone Italy. While I mentioned the phrase "customer support" above, I hesitate to consider our relationship one of a "client/vendor". It's much more than that. She's our Italian partner and more importantly, our friend who genuinely has our best interests in mind.
